Windermere, United Kingdom - September 8, 2017 /PressCable/ —

A Georgian house set in a stunning landscape and with a wealth of history to talk about – that’s Calgarth Park at Troutbeck Bridge. In its 227-year history, it has been a bishop’s residence, WWI convalescent hospital and a pioneering children’s orthopaedic hospital known as the ‘Ethel Hedley’ for fifty years until 1970. It was only empty for two years before an enterprising group of women saw its potential and found the expertise and funds to convert the house into retirement flats. Since 1974, Calgarth Park has been administered by the Lake District Housing Association and has provided sheltered housing and independent living with companionship for those looking to enjoy living in the Lakes. Calgarth Park is a Grade II listed building tucked away down a private drive but only a quarter of mile from the A591. The house and gardens have lovely views of the lake and Claife Height and residents enjoy the peaceful ambience and beautiful surroundings. Calgarth is taking part in the Heritage Open Days national event for the fifth year and will open its doors for one day only on Sunday 10 September from 10am to 4.30pm. This year, for the first time, there is an extra attraction: historic costumes on display, thanks to Mrs Jennifer Snell of Ulverston. The dresses were recently seen on the Antiques Roadshow from Holker Hall and Mrs Snell has kindly agreed for them to be on display at Calgarth, along with some children’s items, for this special event. Also on display will be photographs and pictures covering the lifespan of the house. There will be short talks and tours available at 10.30, 12.00, 1.30 and 3.00 when visitors can learn more about the people who lived in the house, whether as residents or patients. There is no entry charge and no need to book; just come along on Sunday 10 September and find out more about a house and its history.
